When you think about the best things in life, do you imagine prosperity, a booming business charming husband who does everything close to perfect? How about a family portrait that graces the cover of a well known magazine? Perhaps you don’t envision the future when you think of your best days, but you think about your past instead. Maybe you were an ace student or the most popular girl in school. When you hear the phrase, the best is yet to come, what automatically comes to mind?
When you were a child, older people would say, “You better enjoy it, this is the best time of your life”. When you entered high school people said these are the best years of your life! If a young person passed away, whispers can be heard throughout the crowd saying, their best years were ahead of them. Who’s right? Surely when you’re young you have youthful energy and best of all you don’t have to pay any BILLS! On the contrary, when you are older, you’re wiser (presumably), you can start a family, earn money and basically leave your mark in life. Either one can be classified as your "best years". Then something begins to happen. One day you look in the mirror, your hair is gray, your wrinkles are many, your children are grown and a voice says, you’re best days are behind you. Perhaps you didn’t accomplish all wanted in life. Life may have dealt you a bitter blow. The question remains, who was right? Are your best days in your childhood, high school, as a young adult, or as a mature woman?
I’d like to argue that your latter will be greater, but it’s not what most refer to. That woman, who stares in the mirror, who’s body has been touched by the hands of time shouldn’t fret because her best is yet to come. Things happen that rock us to our very core, but imagine being in a place of no more. No more pain, no more suffering, no more sickness death or crying. A place where God Himself will wipe every last tear from your eyes. A place where everything is new, the old is passed away and God says, It is done! Dwelling in a place where the city walls are made of jasper and the city of pure gold , as pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls are decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eight beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh, jacinth and the twelfth amethyst. The gates are made of pearl and the gold so pure it’s transparent. There will be no night and no need for the sun or moon to shine because the glory of God gives it light. And the Lamb is the lamp. Best of all we will finally behold His Face! These wonderful descriptions comes straight from Revelation Chapter 21 and Chapter 22.
Heaven is a place all desire to go, but as wonderful as this description of Heaven sounds our finite minds cannot wrap around it. It’s so easy to get caught up in the here and now of this world, it’s so easy to become dissatisfied with where your life may be. It’s so easy to look towards brighter days, but we must remember that Heaven is God’s best for us. To finally have our spirits united with Him is His desire and should be ours. That’s not to say that we should want better for ourselves or that’s we can’t long to be greatly blessed by our sweet Savior, but the point is to encourage you to keep your eyes on the prize to think of spending eternity in a real place called Heaven.
What are we doing with our lives now? Not looking behind or ahead, but living in the here and now.
Be Set Apart - Our job is to live a set apart life. The Bible tells us that we are in this world, but not of this world. As sons and daughters of God we are commanded to come out from among them. As Christian women our lives should be so radically different that we should give a full sermon before we even open our mouth!
Be Bold - We should be bold for Christ! Something stands out in Revelations 21:8 (NIV) 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
Did you see it? The sexually immoral, our most talked about sin, is not even mention first, murderers didn’t’ even make the top three. But what is named first? Cowardly or Fearful as King James has it listed. We have to stop believing Satan who puts fear in our heart. Fear that keeps us from doing what God told us to do. Fear of looking different and most of all fear of Testifying to others. How many unbeliever have we witnessed to in the last 30 days? We talk about gratitude and giving to others. Sharing earthly wealth with others, but are we sharing TRUE riches with the dying? We just read about the beautiful city. As eloquent as John described it, that does it no justice. How many people are we telling about that ?
3. Be Transformed - We are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds daily. I mention earlier how easy it is to get caught up in dissatisfaction whether you think your best days are ahead or behind you. The fact remains that none of us know when our last moment will be. Whether we die or Christ comes back we mustn’t waste precious time dwelling on shouldas, coulda and wouldas. This very moment is a gift, which is why it’s called the present. We renew our minds, by changing the way we think. Right thinking is important to living a Christian life. That’s why the enemy attacks our thoughts. If we are equipped with the truth, which is the Word of God, we can stand against lies. When our thinking is right our priorities are right. When our priorities are right, our actions are right. When our actions are right in the sight of God a straight path is laid before us. There are no short cuts, nor magic formulas on how to renew your mind, but when we are girded with the truth, nothing can prevail against it.
Ladies as I encourage you, I encourage myself to be strong in the Lord and the power of His might. This life we were given to live is a wonderful thing and it’s important to enjoy it to the very last drop. Don’t worry about your best days being ahead or behind, but keep your eyes on Him. Hold on to the one Who is holding you. As my dad used to say, "When we close our eyes on this side we will wake up in a place where it’s always howdy howdy and never goodbye." Until then, enjoy your best life now!
